Our building, the fourth in Spain to be built entirely in concrete in 1924, is a living testimony to 20th century industrial Bilbao.

Adolfo Gil Lezama was the architect in charge of the design, promoted by Jose Mª Erice. The building, located at Ribera 13, had a residential use, with only one dwelling per floor and all kinds of amenities: lift, central heating and running hot water, among others.
José Mª Erice's hardware store occupied the commercial premises during the first decades. The advertising of the time advertised it as a ‘department store for screws of all kinds and tools in general’.

Later, the popular Almacenes Zubicaray, with its emblematic astronaut, still remembered by so many people from the region who visited it, came to occupy this commercial space. They sold not only household linen and textiles for clothing, but also school uniforms and even denim.

Today, the Tayko Bilbao hotel has sought to preserve that industrial essence, respecting original architectural elements and fusing them with avant-garde design.
The name Tayko, inspired by the Asian term ‘taykonaut’ (astronaut) in a nod to preserving such a unique heritage, symbolises our ambition to take our guests on an unforgettable journey through history and innovation.
