Bilbao in a day: a leisurely stroll from the Old Town to the Vanguardia

Bilbao can easily be explored in a day if you combine its historical roots with the transformation that has made it a leading destination for architecture and gastronomy. This itinerary offers a leisurely, unhurried tour that follows the course of the estuary.

Tomorrow: the origins of the city

The day begins in front of the Tayko Hotel. As you cross the Puente de la Merced, you come to the Mercado de la Ribera, one of the most iconic spots in local life.

From there, a stroll along the Ripa quay takes you alongside the estuary, with views of the colourful façades of Calle Ribera. It’s an easy and pleasant walk.

The Zubizuri Bridge marks the transition to the more contemporary part of the city. Once you’ve crossed it, the route continues to the Guggenheim Museum. It’s worth walking around it to see both Puppy and Maman (the spider) and to admire the building from different angles.

Midday: a culinary break

At lunchtime, the area around Doña Casilda Park and the Museum of Fine Arts offers a peaceful setting.

For lunch, Ledesma and García de Salazar streets offer a good selection of pintxo bars and restaurants serving high-quality set menus. If you’d prefer something a bit more formal, there are some excellent options around Plaza del Ensanche.

Afternoon: shopping and a stroll

In the afternoon, Gran Vía de Don Diego López de Haro is the main shopping hub, offering a mix of international brands and department stores such as El Corte Inglés. For something a little more exclusive, it’s worth exploring nearby streets such as Rodríguez Arias or Marqués del Puerto.

You can make your way back along Calle Navarra, passing in front of the Arriaga Theatre, before returning to the Old Town and walking through Plaza Nueva.

Evening: end of the day

Dinner at Ola Martín Berasategui, located in Tayko Bilbao and awarded a Michelin star, is the perfect way to round off the day, with a menu focused on local produce and culinary technique. Due to high demand, it is recommended that you make a reservation in advance.

Extra tip

If you have time to spare, Azkuna Zentroa is well worth a visit. Its interior, designed by Philippe Starck, is one of the most unique spaces in the city centre.
