Seville’s monuments: the living history of a city steeped in history

Seville is a city where every street is steeped in centuries of history. It was the capital of the Empire during Spain’s golden age, a melting pot of cultures and the starting point of the first voyage round the world. All of this history is reflected in its extraordinary architectural heritage. A comprehensive guide to the must-see monuments, helping you discover the city’s entire historical heritage.

Seville Cathedral and the Giralda

Seville’s most visited monument is also one of the most impressive in the world. The Cathedral of Santa María de la Sede was built on the site of the former Almohad mosque in the 15th century and is the largest Gothic cathedral in the world, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The remains of Christopher Columbus rest within it, and from the top of the Giralda, its iconic bell tower of Islamic origin, you can enjoy the best panoramic view of Seville.

The Royal Alcázar of Seville

The Real Alcázar is, alongside the Cathedral, the most visited monument in Seville and one of the best-preserved medieval palaces in Europe. It was declared a World Heritage Site and remains the official residence of the Spanish royal family when they visit the city. Its gardens, its Mudejar courtyards and the splendour of its halls mean a visit here takes several hours. It is essential to book your ticket in advance.

Plaza de España

Built for the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition, the Plaza de España is one of the most spectacular sights in the whole of Spain. Its semicircle of Neo-Renaissance buildings, the canal with its boats, the tiles depicting the Spanish provinces and the harmony of the whole have made it one of Seville’s most photographed and recognisable landmarks.

The Santa Cruz Neighbourhood and the Archivo de Indias

The Santa Cruz neighbourhood, the former Jewish quarter, is a living monument in its own right. Its narrow streets, its squares lined with orange trees, its flower-filled courtyards and its unique atmosphere form part of the city’s historical heritage. Next to it stands the General Archive of the Indies, which houses millions of documents relating to the conquest and colonisation of the Americas and, together with the Cathedral and the Alcázar, forms part of the historic complex designated a World Heritage Site.

Torre del Oro and Triana

On the banks of the Guadalquivir, the Torre del Oro is one of Seville’s most recognisable landmarks. Built in the 13th century as an Almohad defensive tower, it now houses the Naval Museum. Opposite it, on the other side of the river, the Triana neighbourhood offers its own history through pottery, flamenco, tapas and a unique identity that is well worth a visit in its own right.

Other must-see sights in Seville

The Basilica of La Macarena, the Casa de Pilatos, the Hospital de la Caridad, the Metropol Parasol (popularly known as Las Setas), the Roman walls and the Palacio de las Dueñas round off a list of monuments that make Seville one of Europe’s most culturally rich destinations.
